Book Reflection Week 3 Chapters 11-19

 Chapter 11

Chapter 11 is about the second eldest daughter, Lady Margaret Sutton. She had gone to Paris to learn fashion before the war and chose to not come back to England at the start of the war because she fell in love with a French man and wanted to be with her. The chapter starts off in her room when she gets abducted into german captivity where she is introduced to Madame Armande who was also a captured English woman who was allowed to live over a deal to care for other prisoners like Margaret.

    Thoughts:

We are again introduced to another character and with the minimal introduction, we are able to know what kind of person she is.

Chapter 12-14

In these chapters, Pamela and Ben finally meet Jeremy after a long time, and after the two talk to each other Ben says that he would leave and let the two talk. While the two talk, Ben goes to his father's room to borrow a map of the place to set a route to scout the neighborhood. While Palmela and Jeremy are talking in his room, Jeremy's father comes in and Palmela says that she needs to leave and go back home. Jeremy's father offers to drive Pamela home and she accepts and drives to the Sutton house in the Prescotts Royals Royce.

    Thoughts:

Most of these 3 chapters are dialogues between the characters. One part the stood out to me was when Pamela said she felt a small relief when Jeremy's father came in while they were talking. This showed hesitation between the two loves as Jeremy was being a little pushy with Palmela while they were talking.

Chapters 15

in this chapter, we go back to Paris where we see Margaret getting her things ready as she needs to move into the house where madame Armande lived. She goes into the restroom and turns on the fossit while she hides the radio transceiver she was hiding in the books so she won't get caught when the security checks her luggage when they get to the house. She fumbles for a bit as she tries to find a good spot to hide it as she didn't want the Germans to find it but wanted Armande to find it as she may be working for the English.

Thoughts:

I thought it was strange why Margaret had spy tools as she said she was only here because she wanted to stay for her lover. I feel like this would be a foreshadow of who she actually is. Did she only actually stay just to say with her French lover or was there another reason that the story had not revealed.

Chapter 16:

The English base gets information from Armande that Lady Margaret was captured.

Thoughts:

This chapter was a concise 2-page chapter, so I didn't have any thoughts but thought it was really surprising to see Madame Armande was actually a spy for the English side and wasn't just a fashion designer who was captured by the Germans.

Chapters 17-18

Ben and Pamela think about their talk with Jeremey and both have different feelings about it. They meet and talk about miscellaneous things like Lady Diana not being able to work. When Palmela gets home, Lord Westerham and Diana are disputing about not being able to get a husband when Palmela assures her that she should stay home right now as after the war ends, there would be plenty of men who would love to be with Diana.

Thoughts:

The problem about not being able to go outside and explore during the war was someone relatable to the current corona pandemic. The feeling of wanting to go outside and doing what we could have done, but not being able to do it is a feeling I often had and it was fascinating to know that people during the war also had this problem.

Chapter 19:

The Sutton family and Creswell family are invited to the Prescotts welcome back party for Jeremy and though both Ben and Palmela didn't want to go at first, they both agree to go for different reasons. Ben starts to go around the neighborhood talking to people and trying to find out who looked suspicious and rather wanted to talk about the body too much or wanted to avoid it too much.

Thoughts:

Ben finally started to do the job he was supposed to do when he came back and in this chapter, I thought it was cool to show what Ben was doing while also showing the neighborhood and introducing the minor character in a short time.
